Plan out your lighting. Determine whether you want the icicle lights to hang from the rafters all the way around the house or just a portion. Maybe you want them only around the porch. Figure out where the outdoor electrical outlets are in relation to your lighting plan. This will tell you whether you need extension cords and how many you may need.

Plug in each strand of icicle lights while you are still indoors. Make sure each strand works before you spend the time hanging them.

Unravel each strand of lights before you begin hanging. It is very difficult to unravel the lights while you are up on a ladder, attempting to hang them.

Climb the ladder and hammer in a nail about every 6 inches along your hanging route. Leave approximately 1/4 inch space on each nail to hang the lights on.

Hang the lights along the nails and plug them in.

Having someone to help you is always a good idea. Not only does a helper prevent you from having to climb up and down the ladder as often, a helper can hold your ladder steady and tell you if all the lights are working or you have hung them straight.
