How to Shop for Male Wigs
Although wig shops appear to cater primarily to women, most stores that stock wigs also carry at least a few wigs (also called "hairpieces" or "toupees") for men as well. Some wig shops also have wigmakers on site who can make you custom wigs based on your personal preferences or photographs of your natural hair. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Call local wig shops in your area to see if they stock men's hairpieces. If you are interested in having a custom wig made, ask to schedule an appointment with the shop's wigmaker or stylist.
-
2
Visit several shops and try on a variety of hairpieces to see what you like best. Take a friend or family member along for feedback and support. Look for wigs that are similar to your usual hair color and style.
Ask the shop about the options they have in synthetic hair and in human hair. Synthetic hair can be styled and cleaned more easily than human hair, and is far less expensive, but doesn't quite move the same way real hair does. Human hair behaves exactly like your own hair would, but hairpieces made from it can start at $400 to $500 and go upwards from there. Also be aware that machine woven toupees can look phony when a part is made.
Once you find a hairpiece you like, ask the staff at the shop to fit you correctly for it.

Ask the shop stylist about how to properly care for your hairpiece, including how to clean it, what styling products can be used and how to tell if it needs repairs or maintenance. Purchase any special products you will need to wear the wig, such as cleaning products or adhesives to hold it in place.
