How to Melt Plastic Fishing Worms to Make New Ones

Old or damaged soft plastic fishing lures can be melted down and poured into worm molds to create brand new lures. You can melt the worms in a microwave until they have reached a liquid state and then add colorings to create your own custom lures. Safety goggles and gloves should be worn during this process as the plastic will be hot and may give off irritating fumes when it is heated.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the worms thoroughly to remove any dirt or dust. Foreign debris in the melted plastic could compromise the quality of your new worms.

    • 2

Spray a worm mold with nonstick cooking spray and place the mold on your work surface. You may want to open a window at this time because the melted plastic does give off an unpleasant odor.

    • 3

Place the clean plastic worms in a Pyrex bowl or measuring cup. Place them in the microwave and cook on high for 3-1/2 to 5 minutes or until the plastic has become liquid.

    • 4

Stir in any plastic coloring, scents or flavorings at this time. Place the plastic back into the microwave and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

    • 5

Remove the plastic from the microwave and immediately pour it into the worm mold. Allow the plastic to cool for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, then remove it gently from the mold.

    • 6

Allow the plastic worms to cool overnight on a paper towel. Trim any rough edges from the worm with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not melt plastic worms containing metallic glitter in the microwave. The metal could start a fire.
