Photographer Ansel Adams once said, "A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety. Photographs provide the ability to stop time and reflect on a moment. Preserving these moments is as important as the photographs themselves. Typical display methods include a frame hung on a wall or one set on a mantel. However, creating an image on tile offers a unique and a priceless way to display these precious memories.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photographic image
  • Ceramic tile
  • Turpentine
  • Paint brush
  • Lazertran Waterslide decal paper for an ink jet printer
  • Scissors
  • Large container to fit the print size
  • Water
  • Rolling pin
  • Varnish
  1. Step 1

Determine the size and shape of the photograph you will be using for your project. You can edit your image using photo-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.

  2. Step 2

Print your image with an ink jet printer onto photo imaging decal paper, such as Lazertran Waterslide. The image should be printed onto the eggshell side of the paper, which has a chalky appearance.

  3. Step 3

Wait 30 minutes to ensure the image on the decal paper is completely dry.

  4. Step 4

Cut the image to size with scissors if needed.

  5. Step 5

Place the image into a large container of water and allow it to soak until the decal starts to release from the paper and the edges curl up.

  6. Step 6

Cover the ceramic tile with turpentine using a paintbrush. The surface should be completely covered, yet not dripping wet.

  7. Step 7

Remove the image from the water and carefully peel off the paper backing.

  8. Step 8

Position the image onto the ceramic tile.

  9. Step 9

Remove the air bubbles from the image by using a rolling pin on the surface. Roll from the center of the image to the outer edges.

  10. Step 10

Place the image in a safe location so it can dry for at least eight hours or overnight.

  11. Step 11

Seal the tile by brushing two coats of varnish over the dried image. Allow the varnish to dry completely between coats.
