How to Apply Track Hair Extensions With Clips

Hair extension tracks that use clips instead of the traditional sewn-in application are easy to apply and even easier to remove. They are a good choice for those who want to wear hair extensions short term and don't want the commitment of sewn-in or bonded hair extensions. Clip-in extensions are usually made of synthetic hair, although you can purchase them with natural hair. Put in extensions to make your hair longer, or add a bright stripe of color for a rocker look without the commitment.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Hairstyling tools
  1. Step 1

Comb your hair into its usual style, and section it off using clips. You'll want to section off every area about a half inch from where you plan on placing the extension tracks. Because the clips can sometimes be noticeable, it is best to place them in areas such as the crown, or above your ears or bangs, where there is more hair to hide them.

  2. Step 2

Brush out the extensions so they lay flat. Lift up a section of your hair, and press down on the clip on the hair extension track, causing it to open. Slide the clip on the underside of the hair that you have lifted, as close to the scalp as possible. Clamp the clip down to hold.

  3. Step 3

Lay the top portion of the hair down over the track so that the clip is concealed. Fluff the hair over the clip to make it less noticeable. Style your hair accordingly; teasing or adding extra volume is a good idea for blending in hair extensions.

  4. Step 4

Add other tracks into your hair, in the places that you've planned. Each time that you placed a clip in track, conceal it so that you can see how the progress is coming as a big picture. Don't wait to place all the tracks before styling to conceal; you may find that your extensions are too obvious.

  5. Step 5

Style your hair using the styling tools and products that you would normally use on your natural hair. Be careful when applying heat, as it may scorch the synthetic material. Dial it down to a lower temperature before using on extensions.
