1
Prepare your furniture. Remove any drawer pulls and other hardware or cover them with painters tape. Use a medium sandpaper to sand down the furniture. Smooth off rough edges and any peeling paint.
-
2
Paint the green base coat. Pick a flat, green paint rather than a gloss so the paint you add for your polka dots has a flat surface on which to adhere. Use spray paint or paint the furniture with a wide, flat brush, using even strokes. Get into crevices with smaller brushes or sponge brushes that can be dabbed into tiny spaces. Apply two coats of green paint, making sure each coat dries before applying the next one. Allow the base paint to dry.

3
Cut out your circles. Trace a round object, like a small dish, jar or water bottle lid or other circular object onto a sheet of thin cardboard. Leave ample room between circles so the borders do not become weak and rip. Mix up circle sizes for a funky effect or keep them uniform sizes for a more systematic effect. Use a pen knife to carefully cut out the circular shapes, keeping the surrounding cardboard intact.

4
Trace circles onto the furniture. Lay the cardboard cutout against the furniture and use a pencil to trace the inside of the circular shapes wherever you want a polka dot to appear. Use a light colored pencil, like white, on an especially dark green base. Bend the cardboard to trace circles around bends, corners and furniture legs.

5
Fill in the circles with paint. Use a thin brush to carefully fill in your circles with either pink or white paint. Use paint pens to outline the circles or to fill in the smaller circles for easier control.
-
6
Seal. Spray the finished piece with a sealer, such as polyurethane, to best protect your paint job once the paint is dry.

Tips & Warnings
Rather than make your own circles, find a stencil set that contains circular shapes at an arts and craft store.
To add a little extra punch, outline your polka dots with a thin black paint pen or other contrasting paint pen color.
Use paint pens to draw smiley faces or other fun designs in larger polka dots.
Make some polka dots overlap or appear within larger polka dots to add variation.
If you are using a dark green and a light white or pink, you may want to apply two coats of paint to the polka dots to make them more visible.
Be careful not to smear the painted circles while you add new ones.
