How to Make Your Own Flower Girl Basket
The flower girl role is a position of honor in your wedding party. Steeped in tradition, the first flower girls appeared at weddings in ancient Rome, carrying sheaves of wheat and herbs for use during the marriage ritual. Today's flower girl makes a statement that sets a tone for the wedding ceremony and festivities afterward. With a few simple tools, you can make a flower girl basket to show your flower girl how much you appreciate her.
Things You'll Need
- 1 5 inch wide roll of 25 yards of tulle, your choice in color
- 1 piece of foam, 1 inch thick
- 2 or 3 soup cans, full
- Measuring tape
- Silk flowers
- 4 yards of ribbon
- Hot glue gun and glue stick
Instructions

1
Measure and cut the tulle to a length long enough to tuck one end of the tulle into the base of the basket, wrap it around the outside of the basket and tuck the other end into the bottom of the basket so the two ends meet. This is your template piece. After you have this template piece made, cut 12 more pieces the length of the template piece.
-
2
Hot glue the first piece into place. Use a quarter-sized dollop of hot glue, and continue to wrap other pieces of tulle in the same manner, filling in the sides of the basket. Lightly press these pieces into place to hold them in the bottom of the basket.

3
Using more glue, finish wrapping the tulle all the way around the outside of the basket.
-
4
Trace the shape of bottom of the basket onto the piece of foam and cut it out. Dot the foam with hot glue on one side. Fit the foam into the basket on top of the glued tulle. Place the soup cans on top of the foam to hold it in place while it dries. After the hot glue dries, remove the soup cans.
-
5
Measure the length of the handle of the basket. Cut the remaining tulle to the length of the handle plus 12 inches.
-
6
At the 6-inch mark, gently knot the tulle around one side of the handle. Twist the tulle tightly around the handle over to the other side. Knot this side as well.
-
7
Cut 2 yards of ribbon and tie at the base of each side of the handle. Affix silk flowers using hot glue to the outside of the ribbon, completing the look of the basket.

Tips & Warnings
If you plan to use fresh flowers in your flower girl basket decoration, you must wait until a couple hours before the wedding to assemble the basket to preserve the freshness of the flower buds. Use your imagination and add elements such as berries or twigs to your traditional flower girl basket to make it more natural-looking. If you prefer an ultra-modern look, use thicker ribbon and less tulle.
Always use caution when working with hot glue guns and sharp objects such as pins and scissors.
