How to Build a Dummy Web Site

A dummy website is a website that holds dummy text, images, menus and other content, which you can revamp when you are ready to launch your actual website. Creating a dummy allows you to plan the layout of your website and reuse it. You can create a simple dummy website or template using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web editor if you're not familiar with HTML, or create a more complex design from scratch using an image editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Go online to http://www.kompozer.net/download.php and download a copy of Kompozer.

    • 2

Open Kompozer and select "File, New" from the menu.

    • 3

Select the second option to build a new document based on an existing document or select the third option if you'd like to a blank template. To utilize option two, you will need to enter the web address of the template you want to use, a useful option if you're unfamiliar with web design.

    • 4

Click on "Create" and click on the "HTML Tags," "Source," or "Preview" mode to work with the content. Replace the existing content with content for your dummy website.

    • 5

Add links to other dummy pages within your page by typing your text link and right-clicking on it. Select "Link Properties." In the "Link Properties" dialog box, and enter a web page location, file or email address.

    • 6

Place a checkmark by "Link is to be opened" in the target section to specify how links should be opened and click "OK."

    • 7

Replace images by right-clicking on an existing image an selecting "Image and Link Properties."

    • 8

Select the "Location" tab in the "Image Properties" dialog box and navigate to the image folder and file you want to use by clicking on the folder icon to the right of "Image Location." Choose "Open" when you are finished. Add an alternate text or tool tip to the image and click on "OK."

    • 9

Change the font and formatting by highlighting the text on your page and selecting the format you want to use from the menu. For additional features, select "Format" and the applicable option.

    • 10

Save your dummy web page and any inside pages individually by selecting "File, Save As" from the menu. In the "Save Page As" dialog box, navigate to the folder you want to place your dummy files in.

    • 11

Name the home page "index.html." Give the inside pages of your dummy website descriptive file names like "about.html" and "contact.html." Click on "Save."
