Word Bingo is a fun way to teach spelling and vocabulary. Use Dolch sight words, grade-level lists, reading-level lists or your choice of categories when making bingo card sets. Make cards in sets of 30 to use them in a classroom setting. Have each child read all words on the list out loud before you begin. Ask each child to write a short story with all the words on the winning bingo card.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 30 sheets of 8-by-10-inch shirt cardboard
  • Wide-tip markers
  • Straight-edge ruler
  • List with 75 words in your chosen category
  • Drawstring bag
  • 75 3-by-2-inch poster board tags
  • Clear contact paper
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Use a straight edge and wide-tip marker to make five rows down and five rows across each sheet of shirt cardboard. Write the word "FREE" in the center square.

  2. Step 2

Choose a word list. Write one word on each poster board tag using a wide-tip marker.

  3. Step 3

Place all the tags in the drawstring bag. Draw 24 tags from the bag in any order. Write one word from the 24 tags you drew from the bag in every remaining space on your Word Bingo card. Repeat for all 30 Word Bingo cards.

  4. Step 4

Lay each Word Bingo card on a sheet of clear contact paper and press from the center of the card to the sides, to smooth out any air bubbles. Lay a second sheet of clear contact paper over the first, sticky side down.

  5. Step 5

Press from the center of each card to the sides to remove any air bubbles. Trim each card to 1/2-inch from the edge of the shirt cardboard and smooth again. Prick any air bubbles with a straight pin if necessary.

  6. Step 6

To play, have one person be the caller. Give everyone a Word Bingo card and a pile of dry beans, small candies, pennies, plastic bingo chips or small paper squares to use as chips. Remove one tag from the drawstring bag and have children take turns reading the word. Assist preschool age children in reading the cards. Encourage older children to sound out out the words before covering the spaces on their cards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dolch Sight Words are the 220 most frequently used words in children's literature. Because the list was created in 1936, there are amended lists available. Free graded spelling lists can be used to assess your child's basic reading level. Have your child read each word on each list until she makes three mistakes in a row. Hesitations and mispronunciations count as mistakes. It is not necessary for your child to know the meaning of the words to assess his reading level, but looking up definitions is a useful extended activity. You may also wish to use the Cambridge English Readers Level Placement Test.
