Make a Powerful Natural Mouthwash

This natural mouthwash tastes very good, and contains easy-to-get ingredients known to eliminate germs that cause flu, colds, bad breath, and restores the conditions in the mouth needed to naturally rebuild tooth enamel and eliminate cavities and gum disease. You may find a good commercial natural mouthwash that compares, but if not, this eHow article shows how to make a natural mouthwash that some believe is incredibly effective.

Also, this natural mouthwash avoids alcohol known to dry the mouth which helps unwanted bacteria grow, and fluoride, which some now feel inactivates an enzyme in saliva needed for natural tooth and mouth repair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your natural mouthwash ingredients. You'll need distilled water (very cheap at grocery stores), baking soda and sea salt (not table salt), also cheap from grocery stores. And from natural food or health food stores, you'll need xylotol which looks similar to white sugar and is sold in small bags, liquid GSE grapefruit seed extract, and clove essential oil (not the culinary clove oil). The last two will be your main expense, but they last for a very long time and can be used for other purposes besides your natural mouthwash around the house (see Tips below).

Mix your natural mouthwash. In one cup of distilled water, mix one tablespoon of xylotol. The crystals sometimes take a while to completely dissolve, but they will in time. Add one fourth teaspoon of baking soda and one fourth teaspoon of seasalt and mix well. Then add one drop of the clove oil and three drops of the grapefruit seed extraxt and mix again. Pour into a lidded container. Shake it occasionally or just wait until all the xylotol crystals have dissolved.

Use your natural mouthwash in the following way for the following reasons. Swish and gargle with your natural mouthwash as you would any mouthwash - in the morning, after eating and right before retiring. Xylotol is a naturally occurring sweetener now believed to actually help eliminate tooth decay because it allows an alkaline rather than an acid condition in the mouth unlike other sweeteners, and it doesn't allow bacteria to cling to body tissues so they can't do harm. Clove oil is an ancient, powerful antiseptic with a wonderful scent once used to prevent the plague, and used today by dentists in various products. As an ingredient in natural mouthwash, it's believed to eliminate plaque, gum diseases, cavity bacteria, and even cold and flu germs. The sea salt creates a "seawater brine" used by some to further alkalize and help the body's own saliva remineralize and harden the teeth as it was meant to when the right conditions are created. Salt also eliminates bacteria. The baking soda further produces an alkaline condition in the mouth and some swear they have even seen cavities fill in on their own when swishing with sea salt and/or baking soda on a regular basis. Others have successfully used the grapeseed extract for mouth sores, gum problems and to eliminate cavities. All mixed together as a natural mouthwash, the xylotol and clove oil give a delicious flavor that completely masks the saltiness and slight bitterness of the other ingredients.

Tips & Warnings

  • The grapefruit seed extract is great for sterilizing food working surfaces, toothbrushes, and putting a few drops in your handsoap for a natural way to disinfect that doesn't also destroy beneficial bacteria. Clove essential oil is a wonderful way to freshen and cleanse the air through misters and other aromatherapy techniques.
