Before setting out on a camping trip or outdoor picnic, it is important to pack the proper gear. A screen tent is a great addition to any campsite and can be used in several ways. It can be set up over a picnic table to shield you from rain, or it can help keep the bugs from bugging you. In addition, a screen tent is great for letting in a cool breeze while offering protection from the outdoor elements.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Instructions

  1. Step 1

Lay the tent on to the ground and unroll it to spread it out. Locate all stakes, guylines and poles.

  2. Step 2

Unfold the fiberglass extension poles and connect them to make one long pole. Depending on the brand of screen tent, you could have between two and six poles. The poles will be joined with an elastic cord, which is used to keep them connected when unfolded.

  3. Step 3

On the outside top or roof of the tent there should be long, narrow sleeves that extend from corner to corner. Slip the extended poles through the sleeves, pushing gently and diagonally, from one side of the tent to the other, without letting the pole get snagged on the end of the opening. (If your poles are different lengths when extended, use the longer poles for this section of your screen tent.) When both poles are fully inserted through the sleeves they will end up in a crossed position.

  4. Step 4

Connect each of the remaining four poles (for a four-sided tent) to the end of one of the roof poles to assemble the upright corner supports. You can lift the tent up with the corner support pole and then continue around until all four sides of the tent are standing.

  5. Step 5

Attach the screen tent sides to the poles with the hooks or Velcro straps that are attached to the outside of the tent. Attach a guyline to the tops of the four corners of the tent. Connect the line to a stake and pull away and down, keeping the guyline in line with the tent corners. Gently hammer the stake into the ground to pull the tent taught and secure and stabilize it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always refer to your manufacturer's assembly instructions, as not all screen tents are exactly alike.
  • Keep hammer away from children. Only tap stakes hard enough to sink into ground. If placing your screen tent on a concrete slab, attach guylines and stakes beyond the concrete.
