Model airplanes depend on their wings for flight. The wing of a model airplane is one of the most important and complicated elements of a model airplane to create. The wing must be very light but also stable and capable of supporting the weight of the rest of the plane. Because of this, constructing a model airplane wing is like putting together a wooden jigsaw puzzle. However, the construction of a model airplane wing can teach the maker about the physics of flight.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Balsa wood sheet 12-by-12-inches and 1/32nd of an inch wide
  • Wood glue
  • Scroll saw
  • Drill
  • Pencil
  1. Step 1

Cut out the pieces needed for the model airplane wing from a sheet of balsa wood. Cut out 12 ribs that are 1-inch wide and 1 and 1/2-inches long. These should be thin and flat on the left side and come to a wide round edge on the right.

  2. Step 2

Cut out 4 strips of balsa wood that are 6-inches long and 1/8th of an inch wide. Cut out 4 strips of balsa wood that are 6-inches long and 1/16th of an inch wide. Use a scroll saw to cut out each of these shapes from the balsa wood sheet.

  3. Step 3

Cut a square shapes notch out of the ribs so that the thinner strip of balsa wood can lay across the rib inside this notch. Stack and press the ribs together so that you can cut the notches all at once. Optionally, you can also cut out two holes inside the ribs to reduce the weight. Do this by placing a reverse "D" shape on the right side of the rib and a long triangle inside the left section of the rib. Do this by using a small drill inside the ribs to create a starting hole and cut out the shapes using a scroll saw.

  4. Step 4

Turn the ribs side ways and space them 1-inch apart. Place a small bead of wood glue inside the notch and a 6-inch strip that is 1/16th of an inch wide inside the notch. Do this for bottom side as well. Repeat this once more so that the ribs are now sectioned off into two secured wing shapes. Glue a 18th of an inch wide strip of 6-inch long balsa wood to the front of each group of ribs.

  5. Step 5

Glue another strip along the back of the ribs as well. You can keep the wings sections separate or join them by gluing a rectangle of balsa wood that is 2 inches long and 1 inch wide in between the wings.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can save the cut out balsa wood section and use this as a template to create more airplane wing pieces.
  • Be sure to wear protective goggles while cutting the wood.
