How to Clean a Steam Iron With Vinegar

If your iron is used often, it can accumulate a buildup of starch that can transfer to other items of clothing. Like any household item, it will need to be cleaned from time to time to ensure that it continues to function properly. Vinegar is one of the best natural household cleaners. It's slightly acidic so it easily cuts through dirt and grime, and is eco-friendly so it isn't harmful to your kids and pets.

Things You'll Need

• Vinegar
• Soft, clean cloth
• Toothbrush

Instructions

1. Ensure that the iron is both turned off and unplugged.

2. Mix a solution of half vinegar and half water.

3. Dip the soft, clean cloth in the solution or use a spray bottle and spray it onto the cloth.

4. Wipe the iron's sole plate with the cloth. Be sure to get any small holes and crevices where dirt or dried starch can be hiding. It may help to use a toothbrush for hard-to-reach areas.

5. Clean the cord by wrapping the damp cloth around it and working your way all the way down the length of the cord.

6. Fill the water chamber with vinegar and plug it in and turn it on. Let it heat up and sit for about 10 minutes.

7. Unplug the iron and turn it off before emptying the chamber to remove the vinegar. Rinse it with clean water.

8. Wipe the outer surface of the iron with the dampened cloth to remove any residual dust or dirt.
