A money belt is a must-have when traveling in certain countries and to tourist attractions that draw large crowds. It protects valuable documents as well as cash from pickpockets, and can save you from unnecessary stress and headaches. You can sew your own money belt that attaches to a belt you already own. The peace of mind of keeping everything safe is well-worth the few minutes of effort it takes to make one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide how large the money pouch will be. You will need to double the length, add 2 inches, plus 1 inch to the width. For example, for a 4-by-4 inch pouch you will need a measurement of 10 by 5 inches.

  2. Step 2

Transfer the measurements to the felt and cut it out. Fold the felt, leaving one side 2-inches longer than the other. Pin together the sides, and stitch close on the sewing machine.

  3. Step 3

Cut a strip of the hook-and-loop tape to the same width as the money pouch. Sew the hook half of the tape to the 2-inch flap, and the loop part to the front of the pouch where the flap overlaps.

  4. Step 4

Turn the pouch face down so the side without the opening is facing you. Cut a slit the size of the belt 1 1/2 inch from either side of the pouch. Be careful not to cut through the front of the pouch.

  5. Step 5

Slide the belt through the slits. Place a thin line of fabric glue between the pouch and the belt to secure it in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use any fabric you like to make the pouch, though you will need to hem it to avoid fraying.
  • Keep the belt under your clothing; otherwise, it will be visible to potential thieves.
