How to Make a Balloon Valance

A balloon valance can be used alone on a window or combined with curtains. This window decoration is ideal for small windows, but is not limited to that use. Using balloon valances can really dress up a window as well as the entire room they are used in.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the fabric. Using your tape measure, measure out a length of fabric three times the width of the curtain rod to give the window a full effect. Add another 2 inches for the side seams.

    • 2

Prepare the fabric by hemming and ruffling. Lay the fabric on a countertop or table.

    • 3

Place the material with the right sides together.

    • 4

Sew the unfinished edges with a 1/2-inch seam. Sew the open end closed.

    • 5

Double the fabric in half and sew a 4-inch top ruffle on the top.

    • 6

Create the rod pocket by sewing a 1/2-inch seam from the top of the valance and measure down 2 inches. At that point sew another 1/2-inch seam. This allows for the rod pocket the valance will hang on.

    • 7

Secure the brackets to the wall. Measure your window where the brackets will go to make sure that your curtain rod is long enough and mark where you will be placing the brackets on the wall. Make sure you nail the brackets to a wall stud so they will not pull out.

    • 8

Run the curtain rod through the ruffle on the valance. It will have a surplus of fabric and be very full and ruffly.

    • 9

Create your balloon. Stuff the valance with tissue paper, which will form the balloon look. Once it is stuffed as full as you want, pin the edges together. Gather the balloon valance evenly over the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use see-through materials for your balloon valance as the tissue paper will show through.

  • Use caution when using scissors.
