Keep nail polish on. Even if it is only clear nail polish. This will add a layer of protection to the nails. There are many clear nail polish choices on the market, but choose one that is protein-based and not synthetic. Nail Tek is one brand that offers this. Make sure that you have enough magnesium in your diet. According to Body Language, "Over 60 percent of all magnesium in the body is found in the skeleton." Since the nails are made of bone it is important that we get enough of it. Taking magnesium supplements is an assured way of meeting this need and helps to strengthen soft nails.

Rub oil on your finger nails. The idea behind this trick is that the oil keeps water away from the nail. Water softens the nails so this is a good idea. While any oil will due, there is one in particular that is a good choice. It is called Elemi. It is an essential oil and it can be found in most health food stores.

Avoid picking at or biting your nails. The force that is applied on the nail from biting or picking at the nail weakens it. If at all possible, keep a nail file with you at all times. File the nails often to keep the sides smooth. This will reduce the desire to bite the nails.
