Go to a department store like Wal-Mart, Target, or Big Lots and pick up some contact paper, the kind you line shelves with. It's cheap, easy to work with, and it comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. I've found clear, frosted, wood grain, stainless steel, copper, patterned, and solid colors. They're great!

Use the back side of the contact paper to make your design. It has already been printed with an easy-to-use grid on the back.
Use scissors to cut out the rough shape.
Use a sharp fresh blade in your craft knife to cut out any detailed areas. A sharp X-acto blade will make this easier to do. You can pick one up at Michael's Crafts or Hobby Lobby.

Peel and stick!
Remove the backing from the contact paper to expose the tacky surface.
Simply place the pieces of your decal on the wall and that's it!
