How to Make Homemade Cookie Cutters

With homemade cookie cutters, you can create any shape you want.

Perhaps you need a cookie cutter in a hard-to-find shape or size. Making homemade cookie cutters based on a specialized design is fairly simple. Copper strips can be bent into homemade cookie cutters with a pair of pliers, and following a pattern with the flexible metal is easy. This precise process can be a bit time consuming, so set aside an hour or two to complete the project.

Things You'll Need

• Paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• String
• Copper strip
• Metal-cutting shears
• Masking tape
• Needle-nosed pliers
• Double-sided tape

Instructions

1. Draw the outline of the cookie cutter on a piece of paper with a pencil. Cut out the shape.

2. Outline the drawing with a piece of string. Snip it off. Measure the copper strip against the string, giving it about an extra inch. Cut the strip of copper with a pair of metal-cutting shears.

3. Tape the paper outline to a flat surface and line up an edge of the copper strip with an edge of the outline. Begin bending the copper strip to match the outline, using needle-nosed pliers to make sharp bends or folds in the metal.

4. Line up the edges of the metal strip, overlapping them slightly. Apply double-sided tape to the inside edges of the metal. Stick the overlapping edges together. Pinch and hold them until they are secure.

5. Rinse the cookie cutter with soap and water. Allow it to dry. Line the top edge of the cookie cutter with masking tape to keep it from cutting into hands during use.

Tips & Warnings

• If the cookie cutter edges won't stay stuck together, try pinching them with an adjustable locking clamp and letting the cookie cutter sit for a couple of days. That should allow the tape time to fuse the ends together.

• This method works best with less-detailed designs. The more tucks and folds in the metal outline, the tougher the homemade cookie cutter will be to make.

• When using copper to form your homemade cookie cutters, wear gloves to avoid cutting your fingers on the sharp metal edges.
