Make a Simple Presentation With Apple Keynote '09

Apple's Keynote is a presentation program bundled together with Pages, a word-processing program, and Numbers, a spreadsheet program in iWork '09. Having replaced AppleWorks as Apple's office suite, iWork '09 is an intuitive, easy-to-use set of programs designed to get anyone up to speed and making professional looking documents in no time. Here is how to make a presentation.

From Quick Guide: Basics of Apple
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apple Macintosh Computer running Mac OS 10.4.11 +
  • Apple iWork '09
  1. Step 1

Launch Keynote '09 by clicking its icon in the Dock, or you can go to your Applications and locate it there.

  2. Step 2

Select a theme from one of the many pre-loaded themes that Apple included with iWork '09.

  3. Step 3

Select the size for your presentation at the bottom right of the screen using the drop-down menu labeled "Slide Size."

  4. Step 4

Click the "Choose" button at the bottom right-hand side of the Keynote Theme Chooser window.

  5. Step 5

Double-click the editable areas to change the text on your first slide. This is usually a title slide, so type in the title for your presentation, your name or organization beneath and the date.

  6. Step 6

Click the "New" button (the one with the plus sign at the top left) or click on the slide thumbnail on the left and hit the "Return" key to add a new slide.

  7. Step 7

Double-click on "Double click to edit" to edit the text. Keynote automatically makes the subsequent slide layouts the typical title-bullet points slide, but you can change this.

  8. Step 8

Select "Masters" from the Keynote Menu and choose one of the photo-based layouts from the "Masters" drop-down menu.

  9. Step 9

Select "Media" from the menu at the top of the screen to open up the media browser. This will bring up the Keynote Media Browser.

  10. Step 10

Browse for a photograph to use and drag it on to the slide. You can also use the media browser to add music and video to your slides.

  11. Step 11

Save your presentation. You can also save your Keynote presentation in PowerPoint format (ppt).

  12. Step 12

Click the "Play" button on the top menu to play your presentation. Hit the right arrow key or space bar to move to the next slide. You can also use the Apple remote to control your slide show.
