The cat eye, Marilyn Monroe, or Cleopatra Egyptian look.

Want that sexy Marilyn Monroe liquid liner look, only to try it and end up with that watery Alice Cooper look? Read on.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid eyeliner-
  • My favorites-
  • WET N WILD- (believe it or not) Comes with a tiny pointed paintbrush.
  • L'oreal- comes with a tiny soft and flexible pointed felt tip.
  • These are both best for beginners.
  1. Step 1
    The Perfect Cat Eye
    The Perfect Cat Eye

Wash your face, apply all your foundations, powders, concealers, whatever you do. I find that a clean, oil free eyelid, primed with powder helps the liner to last. If you wear contact lenses- put them in now. If you want to apply false lashes, do it now.
Skip the blush for last, because your hand will be rubbing all over your cheeks.

  2. Step 2
DO NOT CROSS THE RED LINE!
DO NOT CROSS THE RED LINE!

Start at the inside corner of the eye ( closest to the nose ).
Dip your brush or tip into the eyeliner.
Wipe the excess off like a paintbrush. If you have too much liner on the brush, it will "goop" into the corner of your eye and sting like heck.
Relax your face, and eyes. Don't squint.
Lightly and slowly swipe the brush in 1 stroke only 1/2 way across the eyelid, very extremely slightly applying more pressure to fan out the brush and create a wider line as you go. Once you reach the center of the eye- just slightly where the pupil is- STOP!

DO NOT TRY TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE EYE- YOU WILL RUN OUT OF LINER, DRAGGING THE DRY BRUSH ACROSS YOUR EYE WILL RUIN THE LINE.

The center of the eye, just past the pupil, should be the widest part of your line.

  3. Step 3
Fill in the other corner, swipe while releasing pressure for the cat effect...
Fill in the other corner, swipe while releasing pressure for the cat effect...

Re dip your brush in liner, but this time, only slightly wipe the very tip of the brush.

Again, relax the eye, and go to the other corner.
Do it the same way, only backwards. Start thin, at the outside corner, and work your way inward, pressing very slightly to widen your line. When you meet in the middle, dip again, and carefully fill in any empty spaces, such as along the lash line. If you did the first swipe right, this second one should be easy, for the first line is the most important, and should serve as the guideline.

If you would like a dramatic cat eye, dip the brush again, wipe the excess slightly, at the outside corner, press until it is the desired width, and very quickly and slightly swipe outward and upwards towards the temple. Careful! Over do it, and you may end up looking like Amy Winehouse.... YIKES.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice practice practice. You might not be able to do it the first 50 times.
  • It is hard. It takes a steady hand, and practice. I have been wearing my eye liner like this since 6th grade, so, don't give up.
  • Rest your hand on the face while you draw your lines for stability.
  • I don't recommend pulling the skin taut- your line will be deformed.
  • If your eyelids are really wrinkled, or if your eyelid is droopy- try something else. A smokey black eye perhaps? This look doesn't work on everyone.
  • With practice, and experimentation with different eye liners, you can perfect this look.
  • q-tips = your best friend.
  • Use baby oil, or better yet- olive oil to remove eye makeup at the end of the day... DO NOT USE FOR CLEANUP- IT WILL MAKE YOUR EYELID OILY, AND YOUR LINER WILL MELT OFF YOUR FACE.
  • DON'T GET THIS STUFF IN YOUR EYE. OW.
