    • Skein brown yarn
    • I or J crochet hook
    1. Crochet Place Mats

      • 1

        Crochet a chain of 54 stitches. Double crochet in second chain from hook and in each stitch. Chain 3 turn.

        Row 2: Double crochet in back loop only of each double crochet to the end. Chain 3 and turn.Row 3: Double crochet in each double crochet back loop only and the chain 3. Chain 3 and turn.Row 4 through 24 repeat row 3.

        Continue crocheting rows. Check to make sure that the stitches are consistent and the place mat is keeping a rectangular shape. Be sure to continue crocheting in back loop only to maintain the pattern.

        Lay place mat on table. Take a plate and double check that it is the proper size for your plates. Pick the mat up and chain 3. Slip stitch around double crochet "post."

        Chain 3, slip stitch around each double crochet on the side down to the bottom. You are making a loop trim around the place mat, which will help maintain the shape.

        Chain 3 at corner.

        Skip 2 double crochet stitches and slip stitch around both loops of the second double crochet.

        Continue chain 3 loop then slip stitch in 2nd of every 2 double crochets to the next corner. Continue by repeating Step 5 down the side to corner. Repeat Step 8 at third corner. Fasten off at end.

      Decorate Place Mat for Fall and Holidays

        Thread 1/4 inch ribbon through loops for early fall use, if desired. Tie a knot or bow at one corner.

        Thread Halloween ribbon through loops for the last week of October. Use with a Jack O' Lantern coaster.

        Thread raffia or Thanksgiving theme ribbon through for Thanksgiving week.

        Embroider fall leaves with metallic floss or lightly stitch silk fall leaves in one corner of the place mat for another option.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Mix orange, yellow and brown place mats for a large table.

    • As place mat progresses be careful not to lift up on it when crocheting so it doesn't lose its shape.
