Things You'll Need:
- 4 7-by-2 inch boards, cut from any 1/2-inch-thick durable wood
- 2 2-by-2 foot squares of the same wood
- Wood glue
- 20 2-inch wood screws
- Electric drill (to install screws)
- Sandpaper or electric sander
- Weather-resistant paint or wood stain
-
Step 1
Use a good, strong variety of wood for this project, and be sure that it is no less than 1/2 an inch thick. Do not use plywood or particle board if you want the box to last.
-
Step 2
Have six pieces of the wood cut at the mill, or if you prefer, you can cut them yourself. You will need four pieces that are 7 feet long by 2 feet wide. You will also need two pieces that are 2 feet long by 2 feet wide.
-
Step 3
Use a good brand of commercial wood glue to attach the four 7-foot-long pieces of wood together. The first piece will be the top of the box. Attach the second two pieces one on each side. The fourth piece will be the bottom. Use a generous amount of wood glue on each surface.
-
Step 4
Strengthen the bond with 2-inch wood screws. Place the screws about 12 inches apart along all adjoining sides. Be sure that the screws are embedded far enough into the frame that they do not protrude, as this could cause injury.
-
Step 5
Attach the 2-foot pieces of wood to the ends of the box, using the same procedure as above, first gluing and then strengthening the bond with screws.
-
Step 6
Sand all exposed sides, then stain or paint with any weather-resistant product as you prefer.
