Bookshelves are often a necessity for offices, home offices, living rooms and even bedrooms. As they are generally used to hold books, bookshelves are also used to hold CDs, DVDs, board games and other knick knacks. Prices for bookshelves vary greatly according to the size and type of bookshelf. You can always save some dough by opting for used bookshelves instead of new.

Things You'll Need:

  • Cash
  • PayPal account
  1. Step 1

View Craigslist, the popular classifieds listing site, to view any bookshelves for sale in your area. You can search for specifics to narrow your search, or choose to only view listings in particular areas of town. Many sellers will post photographs of the used bookshelves for sale. If not, contact the seller and ask to see a photo before driving out to view it.

  2. Step 2

Read the newspaper, looking for classified ads featuring used bookshelves. People list used furniture for sale in local classified ads so it's worth the time to browse through and see if anything strikes your interest.

  3. Step 3

Visit the major second-hand stores in your area. The Salvation Army and Goodwill are large, well-known thrift stores that resell used furniture. Their inventories aren't certain as they depend on weekly donations so you should visit often to catch new items.

  4. Step 4

Keep an eye out for garage, yard and estate sales in your area. Furniture is often sold at such sales and bookshelves are no exception. When reading the classifieds, check for any upcoming garage sales advertised there.

  5. Step 5

Search for used bookshelves on eBay. Furniture is sold regularly on eBay but do be aware that shipping costs can be very expensive if the seller is located far from you. Most sellers accept PayPal as their preferred method of payment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before purchasing used bookshelves, fully inspect them. Check for sturdy construction and make sure the shelves can withstand some weight.
  • Be wary of sellers that overprice used items. If you feel the bookshelves are overpriced, attempt to negotiate the price. If the seller won't budge, keep looking elsewhere.
