Converting the attic of your house can be an easy way to add living space to a home. Any extra square footage you add to your place means more money in your pocket--provided it is done right.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you can renovate your attic. In many old Victorian houses, the attic is easy to convert because it is a long, open space. Other types of houses may not be that simple to renovate. If it will not be cost effective to create the space, look into fixing the basement instead. Remember, avoiding having to build a staircase can save almost half the cost of renovating an attic.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of what you need to make the attic a livable space. Some attics will need more work than others, so recycle what you can. Windows, insulation, sheetrock and paint are just some of the things that should be on your list.

  3. Step 3

Figure out what you can do yourself. Every thing you can do by yourself or with the help of friends is money that goes into your pocket. You not only save on hiring someone, you also get the "sweat equity."

  4. Step 4

Get quotes from local contractors before you agree to pay someone. There are certain things, such as electrical or plumbing, you don't want to do yourself unless you are an absolute expert. Make sure you shop around and get a few quotes first.

  5. Step 5

Add all your costs together, including materials.
