The structure of the delta kite is one of the most stable of all kite designs. A delta kite's stability comes from its triangular, pyramidal structure which allows the delta kite to fly with the utmost precision and grace. Delta kites have a large overall area and the structure lends itself well to accessorizing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if the delta kite will be used in high winds or not. The structure of the delta kite has to be altered if it will be used under heavy wind conditions.

  2. Step 2

Draw the elements of the kite onto heavy cardboard or poster board before cutting out. Templates for delta kites are available free or a delta kite kit can be purchased (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Use rods or tubes made from graphite or composite materials for constructing the structural skeleton of the delta kite.

  4. Step 4

Make the sail from rip stop nylon. This lightweight and durable material is preferred by kite makers for its strength and flexibility.

  5. Step 5

Add a center holding point to the delta kite's ribbon. This is called the support ribbon and helps to stabilize the overall structure of the delta kite.

  6. Step 6

Attach accessories to the delta kite. The structure of the delta kite allows for long flowing tails, slits in the sides as well as ribbons and graphic add-ons such as eyeballs or even appendages.
