How to Look and Dress Retro Style

Dressing retro usually means wearing the styles from earlier decades. Because the popularity of this style is increasing, it's becoming easier to find new clothing in retro styles. Therefore, you may need to decide whether you want to wear clothing from earlier times, the new clothing or a mixture of both.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Realize that "vintage" is a term that describes clothing that is either new or old, but a style that originates from an era before the current one. For some people, the terms vintage and retro mean the same thing. Retro looks have gone out of style, but if worn well, can still make you look great.

  2. Step 2

Research retro looks in books, magazines and on the Internet. Look at the different styles and clothing items that were popular 20 to 40 years ago. In addition, research what was happening during the eras that new styles came about. For example, when the feminist liberation movement came about, women began showing more skin, especially their legs and ankles.

  3. Step 3

Remember to check out the popular hairstyles and makeup styles from previous eras. For example, mod fashion makeup included heavy eyeliner on the top lid to accentuate the black clothing. On the other hand, hippie fashion was very natural; women often used no makeup at all and jewelry in natural colors.

  4. Step 4

Recognize the different designs and styles that you will find in retro looks. Some examples are simple lines, bold shapes and funky colors, in addition to eye-catching jewelry, accessories and makeup.

  5. Step 5

Think about which styles look good on you. If you are a shorts and T-shirt kind of person, don't go looking for flapper dresses. The style won't look right on you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think about the bands that were popular from the time your parents were growing up until the era of your own childhood. Look for vintage t-shirts with their logos on them.
  • Don't wear retro styles in which you don't feel great. If you feel silly in those bell-bottoms, then you won't enjoy your look.
