How to Make a Butterfly Pinata thumbnail
Pinatas are fun!

Pinatas are a fun addition to a child's party. Rather than spend a chunk of change on a store-bought pinata, make a colorful butterfly pinata using items you already have at home!

Things You'll Need

  • A large, oval balloon
  • Newspaper or an old phone book
  • Flour
  • Water
  • A large piece of cardboard
  • Multiple colors of tissue paper
  • Pipe cleaners or a wire hanger, unwound

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate the balloon. Cover a table with newspaper or an old tablecloth. Place the balloon and all of your supplies on the table.

    • 2

Make a paste for the paper mache by combining one part water and one part white flour. Tear multiple sheets of paper into long thin strips.

    • 3

Dip one strip of paper at a time into the paste. As you take the paper out of the paste, use your forefinger and thumb to remove the excess paste from the paper. Cover the balloon with about four layers of paper mache.

    • 4

Allow the paper mache to dry on the balloon for several days. Use a pin and pop the balloon. Paste on the colored tissue paper as desired.

    • 5

Cut a pair of wings out of the cardboard and glue colored tissue paper onto them in your desired design. Attach the wings to the balloon body with the pipe cleaners or piece of wire hanger.

    • 6

Cut a partial circle near the top of the butterfly's body. Remove the balloon. Fill the butterfly with candy and toys. Have fun!

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are experiencing high humidity, use less water when making your paste.

  • Adding salt to your paste will stop any mold.

  • Add a dash of cinnamon or vanilla to your paste if you don't like the smell!

This is a good idea for any party or perhaps a child's theme garden party. The instructions have lots of detail. A picture showing the completed project would make this article great.
