Step 1
Acquire at least one skateboard and safety equipment (helmet, pads). Always wear safety equipment to prevent serious injuries.

Step 2
Practice as often as possible in order to acquire the technical skills necessary to become a professional skateboarder. You may be able to locate a local skateboard park where you can practice. Showmanship is very important so being able to perform exciting tricks will put you ahead of other skateboarders.

Step 3
Join the United Skateboard Association (USA) and pay the appropriate membership fees. Consider this as a necessary investment in your skateboarding career.

Step 4
Locate events in your area and begin to compete in events for professional skateboarders. There may be entrance fees that must be paid in order to participate. To find out when and where skateboard events will be held, contact the USA.

Step 5
Finding sponsors will help you compete on a national level. It may be difficult to get sponsors in the beginning of your skateboarding career. Sponsors will want to know that sponsorship fees paid will benefit them. Everyone wants to only support winners.

Step 6
Go for it. You are now ready to join the big leagues. Who knows, you may be able to compete in events broadcast by ESPN such as ESPN’s Extreme Games. The winner of the 2004 World Cup received $20,000, while the second and third place winners earned $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. The top 20 skateboarders in the World Cup series won at least $1,000.
