Anime characters have always been favorite costume inspirations, whether it's for conventions, cosplay events or costume parties. Perhaps no anime character is more well-known than Speed Racer, especially since the release of the character's live-action movie. Creating a Speed Racer costume is much easier than that of other anime characters, as long as you keep a few things in mind.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start with a bright blue polo shirt with white cuffs and a white collar. You can always take a solid blue shirt and dye the cuffs and collar white. You may even find a washable dye if you don't want it to be permanent.
Step2
Add a pair of solid white pants. White dress pants may work best but can sometimes be hard to find. Painters' pants or even baseball pants can work as well.
Step3
Include a pair of solid black shoes. Loafers may be best, but solid black sneakers will work, too.
Step4
Tie a bright red scarf, neckerchief or ascot around your neck. This should usually be positioned so the knot and the ends drape over your right shoulder.
Step5
Top off the costume with a white motorcycle helmet. You want an open-face style without a visor. Paint a large, thin "M" across the front of the helmet.
Step6
Finish the costume with a pair of yellow gloves. As with the shirt, your best bet may be to find a pair of racing or work gloves and color them yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're taking a date, get her a white T-shirt and red overalls so she can go as Speed's girl Trixie.
  • If you just happen to have a white convertible, try putting a "5" on each door and a huge "M" on the hood to create your own "Mach 5."
