With minimum effort and just a few tools, you can use a stencil to create a decorative border along a wall.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stencil Paints
  • Stencil Kits
  • Stencils
  • Masking Tape

  1. Step 1

Draw a straight line on the wall to use as a guide for the bottom edge of the stencil.

  2. Step 2

Position the stencil paper and lightly tape it to the wall.

  3. Step 3

Trace the marks onto the wall or onto masking tape.

  4. Step 4

Create a palette on a plastic lid or disposable plate.

  5. Step 5

Paint with the lightest color first.

  6. Step 6

Use a brush that is smaller than the design opening. Dip it into the paint and swirl it on a paper towel before applying it to the wall.

  7. Step 7

Use a rubbing, circular motion with the brush working from the outside in for a smooth effect.

  8. Step 8

Hold the brush perpendicular to the wall and dab the paint onto the wall for a speckled effect. Work from the outside in.

  9. Step 9

Carefully remove tape and stencil paper.

  10. Step 10

Place the stencil paper adjacent to the previous position.

  11. Step 11

Repeat until entire length of wall is completed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to flood edges as this will cause paint to seep under stencil paper.
  • Use a different brush for each color or thoroughly clean brush between colors.

on 8/18/2008 I have recently come accross the greatest product I have used in years. I was considering adding a wall stencil (hand-painted) to my grand-daughters room and a friend recommended this company.

www.thesimplestencil.com or www.simplestencil.com (I am not sure which).

I just got my order yesterday (less than one week after I purchased online) and I installed it today. It is a miracle..It actually looks painted on and is so easy to do. My grand-daughter loves it. The best part is, when she gets tired of it, it is completely removable. I always thought this was a cheap method when I first learned about it but it is definitely the way to go.

I used a promo code my friend gave me to save 10% off, it may work for you too. Promo code SS2

I plan on using them again as soon as I can figure out what I want (the hardest part!).

on 11/22/2005 It is easier to use positionable adhesive spray rather than tape. You don't have to worry about under-painting (smudging around the edges of the cut-outs). For more information go to stencilease.com they have a ton of how-to instructions!

on 11/22/2005 Rather than worry about flooding the edges of your stencil and ending up with a mess, buy a stencil brush and stencil paint. The brushes come in various sizes, and are rounded. You simply load your brush with the very dry consistency stencil paint, and then tap the loaded brush into your stencil area. You can go back over your work to deepen the intensity or depth of the colors in the stencil.
