Knit a Belt

Here's a neat little belt that is meant to be worn over a long shirt or a dress. The particular stitch used is not a very common one. It doesn’t even look knitted, it looks woven.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn for the belt
  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn for edging
  • 3” belt buckle
  • Size 10 knitting needles
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  1. Step 1

    Cast on 24 stitches.

  2. Step 2

(Right Side) Knit two together through the back loop, but only drop one of the stitches off the needle.

  3. Step 3

    Stitch Detail

Repeat across 23 times. You will knit twice into every stitch except the first and last stitches of the row.

  4. Step 4

    Slip the last stitch, turn.

  5. Step 5

(Wrong Side) Knit two together through the front loop, only dropping one of the stitches off the needle.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 until you reach 36 inches (or however long you’d like your belt to be). End wrong side row.

  7. Step 7

Knit two together through the back loop and drop both stitches this time.

  8. Step 8

Knit two together through the back loop but only drop one of the stitches.

  9. Step 9

Repeat across to last two stitches.

  10. Step 10

Knit last two stitches together through the back loop and drop both stitches this time. You should have 22 stitches. Turn.

  11. Step 11

Repeat Steps 7 through 10 five more times ending on the wrong side row. You should be left with 12 stitches.

  12. Step 12

Slip the first stitch and cast off by knitting two together through the back loop but dropping only one of the stitches, then pass the rightmost stitch over the left stitch on your right needle and drop that stitch. Repeat to the last stitch.

  13. Step 13

At the last stitch, slip the stitch from your right needle to the left needle, and pass the leftmost stitch over the right stitch, dropping it from the needle. Bind off and weave in ends.

  14. Step 14

Starting at the middle of the blunt end of the belt and using your edging color of yarn, reverse single crochet around the entire belt. Bind off and weave in ends.

  15. Step 15

Take a minute to block the piece.

  16. Step 16

Sew the blunt end around the crossbar of a three inch belt buckle. You want a buckle that isn’t meant to attach to a belt with holes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your left index finger or thumb to separate the stitches and slide the first of the two stitches off.
  • If you can’t find a 3-inch buckle that you like, try making a skinnier belt.
  • Be sure not to split the yarn. This looks very sloppy and you won’t want to wear the finished product.
