Whether in a pie or on a plate, apple slices are great sweet treat. Methods for slicing an apple vary, but we think this is one the best for safety and efficiency.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apple
  • Small paring knife or vegetable peeler
  • Large chef’s knife
  • Cutting board
  1. Step 1

Peel apple, if desired. Use a vegetable peeler or small paring knife.

  2. Step 2

Place your cutting board on a level surface. Steady the apple on the cutting board with one hand.

  3. Step 3

Cut the apple in half vertically using an 8-inch chef’s knife. Keep your fingers close together and away from the knife blade.

  4. Step 4

Turn each half flat side down and cut both in half vertically, so that you have four equal quarters.

  5. Step 5

Remove the apple core from each quarter. Hold your knife at a 45-degree angle and make a diagonal cut. Each quarter will now have a flat side where the core was.

  6. Step 6

Turn each quarter onto its flat side and cut into two or three slices.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a sharp knife. Besides making cleaner slices, this actually reduces the chance that you will cut yourself. A dull knife is more likely to slip and cause injury.
  • Always cut away from yourself. Assume that the knife is going to slip and think about where your fingers should be to avoid being hurt.
  • For greatest stability and safety, always rest the apple on a flat side before making a cut.
