- Cutting board
- Floral fabrics
- Iron
- Quilting pins
- Rotary cutter
- Ruler
- Sewing machine
- Template plastic
- Thread
- White colored pencil
- White freezer paper
-
Step 1
Find a pattern for an appliqué hearts quilt. You can find one on the Internet, in a fabric store or by purchasing a book of quilt patterns
-
Step 2
Buy floral fabrics. The amount that you will need will depend on the pattern you choose and the size of your quilt, but you will probably need about nine different floral prints. Make sure they work well together, and vary between dark and light fabrics.
-
Step 3
Wash, dry and iron your fabrics. You may want to use spray starch when you iron, but do not use steam.
-
Step 4
Cut out all of the fabric pieces for your background, borders, backing and binding according to the pattern instructions.
-
Step 5
Trace the heart pattern onto template plastic and cut it out. Then, cut the number of hearts that you need on freezer paper with the dull side facing up.
-
Step 6
Iron a freezer paper heart, with the dull side facing up, onto the center of the wrong side of each square. Cut out each heart, and leave a quarter inch seam allowance all around it.
-
Step 7
Pin the hearts and the freezer paper to the center of the right side of each square. Lay out the heart squares and rearrange if desired.
-
Step 8
Blind stitch a heart to each square, turning under the quarter inch seam allowance as you stitch. Carefully clip through the back of each square and remove the freezer paper. Iron all of the squares.
-
Step 9
Stitch the squares together with quarter inch seams. Press the seams toward the darker color.
-
Step 10
Insert the borders as indicated on the pattern. Stitch to squares using quarter inch seams.
-
Step 11
Sandwich batting between the quilt top and the backing, with the right sides facing out. Baste or pin together.
-
Step 12
Quilt or machine stitch around each heart and in the seams.
-
Step 13
Bind the edges of the quilt. You can purchase binding or make your own by measuring around the outside of the quilt and adding six inches.
