Macrame is the art of making accessories, decorations and other such items by knotting cords together into patterns. It can be used to make jewelry, accentuate home decor or even to make purses.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Macrame cord
  • Two long, durable leather straps for the shoulders
  • Two small, thin poles, the width of the purse, with a knot at each end to keep the macrame from falling off

    Make Simple Macrame Purses

  1. Step 1

Cut an even number of cords of equal length--at least 3 or 4 yards each.

  2. Step 2

Cut a few extra cords, a few inches each, to bind the purse together on each side.

  3. Step 3

Fold one length of cord in half and drape it over one of the poles.

  4. Step 4

Bring the two ends through the loop and tighten it. This is a lark's head knot.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the lark's head knot with the remainder of your cords.

  6. Step 6

Using the first four strands, make a square knot. Think of the strands from left to right as A, B, C and D.

  7. Step 7

    Cross A over B and C, then under D.

  8. Step 8

Cross D over B and C, then over A and tighten.

  9. Step 9

Cross A over B and C again and place it under D.

  10. Step 10

Bring D under B and C and over A and tighten again.

  11. Step 11

Repeat the square knot down the rest of the row with your remaining strands.

  12. Step 12

To make the second row, stagger the knots by skipping the first two strands. You should end up with two loose strands at the other end as well.

  13. Step 13

Repeat steps six through 12 down the rest of the cords, leaving a few inches dangling at the bottom.

  14. Step 14

Tie the loose strands at the bottom to the second pole, using simple square knots.

  15. Step 15

Fold the purse in half, bringing the two poles together.

  16. Step 16

Bind the sides together with your shorter strands of rope, using overhand knots.

  17. Step 17

Tie one of the leather straps to one of the poles at each end.

  18. Step 18

Repeat step 17 with the other strap and the other pole.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try making the design a little more fun by adding a row of wooden beads every now and then.
  • Be sure to choose a cord that is attractive yet durable, particularly if the purse is for everyday use.
  • How many cords you cut and how long they are depends largely on how big you want your purse to be.
