Instructions

    • 1

Check the weather report for sunny skies. When you're finished washing your tent, it will need to stay outside to dry.

    • 2

      Set up the tent.

    • 3

Shake or brush off any dirt, pine needles or other substances that can easily be removed.

    • 4

Fill a bucket with warm soapy water. Dishwashing liquid is a good soap to use, or you can buy a product made especially for tents, such as Nikwax Tech Wash (see Resources below). Avoid harsh detergents.

    • 5

Using a sponge or a soft-bristled brush, hand-wash the tent. Clean both the inside and the outside.

    • 6

Use a garden hose to rinse the tent. You may have to rinse it several times to remove all of the soap.

    • 7

Leave the tent pitched until it dries completely. This may take several days. If possible, let it dry in the shade.

    • 8

Store your tent in its sack in a place that is cool and free of humidity.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove mildew, make a solution of 1/2 cup Lysol to a gallon of hot water. Using a sponge, wash the mildewed areas of the tent and allow to dry. Follow with a solution of 1 cup salt and 1 cup concentrated lemon juice in a gallon of hot water. Go over mildewed areas again and let the tent dry completely.

  • To remove tree sap, use mineral oil.

  • Never wash a tent in the washing machine. It will put too much strain on the seams and attachments, and may damage the protective coating.

  • Do not dry clean a tent.

  • Storing an even slightly damp tent will lead to mildew. Make sure the tent is completely dry before rolling it up.
