How to Make a Custom Sanding Block

It's difficult sometimes to sand those nooks and crannies in fancy molding. Here's how the pros make a special block for the job. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Plastic Wrap

Instructions

    • 1

      Lay an 8- to 12-inch-wide sheet of plastic wrap over the face of a piece of scrap molding.

      Mix a two-part filler (Bondo works great) and press it onto the plastic to fit the molding's shape.

      Wrap the edges of the plastic up around the filler and let it set.

    • 4

      Remove the filler block when dry.

    • 5

      Cut a sheet of sandpaper the same width and a few inches longer than the block.

    • 6

      Wrap the ends of the sandpaper around the ends of the block and you now have a custom molding sanding block.

    Using a deck of cards on edge for a sanding block allows it to fit a variety of irregular profiles. Sometimes simpler is better.
