Brown Paper and Washi Tape Advent Calendar

Things You'll Need

  • Washi tape
  • Wooden clothespins, 24
  • Small envelopes
  • Number stickers or a stencil and metallic gold marker
  • Yardstick or tape measure and straightedge
  • Hot glue gun
  • Large star sticker or cardboard star and glitter
  • Snowflake stickers or construction paper, a snowflake punch and a glue stick (optional)

Cut washi tape to fit, and wrap the front of each clothespin with tape.

(We used washi tape with four different designs to create sets of 8, 6, 4, 4, and 2.)

Place one number sticker on each envelope, 1 through 24. Or, use a stencil and marker to number the envelopes.

For each day, write an activity on a slip of paper and enclose in an envelope. Choose fun family activities such as "Sing carols at a Senior Center" and "Make a gingerbread house" and "Family Movie Night: Elf" and "Make powdered sugar doughnut snowmen."

Cut a piece of brown wrapping paper, 44 inches long. Draw a vertical line down the center of the paper. Starting 8 inches from the bottom of the paper, draw five horizontal lines, leaving 71/2 inches between lines. Make the lines 20, 16, 14, 12 and 6 inches long.

Place washi tape in a tree shape, using the marked lines as a guide.

Glue a large star to the top of the tree. (We covered a cardboard star with glitter but a large sticker would work well, too.)

Insert one envelope in the jaws of each clothespin. Arrange the clothespins in rows along the tape "tree," in rows of 8, 6, 4, 4, and 2. Use a hot glue gun to attach the clothespins to the calendar.

Optional: randomly apply snowflakes around the calendar. Stickers would work well, but we punched ours out of construction paper and attached them with a glue stick.

Shoe Organizer Advent Calendar

Things You'll Need

  • 24-pocket canvas shoe organizer
  • Number stamps and ink
  • Parchment paper
  • Wide satin or velvet ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • 24 small gifts

Unfold the shoe organizer and lay it on a flat work surface. Cut parchment paper to fit inside the pockets. Before stamping each pocket, slide the parchment paper into the pocket to keep the ink from bleeding through the fabric. Starting at the bottom, stamp numbers 1 through 24 onto the pockets of the shoe organizer.

Working from the back, attach ribbon to the outside edges, using a hot glue gun.

Use the clips provided with the shoe organizer to hang it on a door, and then fill each pocket with a gift.
