How to Fill Text Outlines With Image in Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator CS5 can fill large text with an image, which allows you to fill the outlines of letters with patterns, nature scenes or anything you like rather than using the standard font tools to fill the text with a solid color. Place the desired image and text in an empty document, then use the Clipping Mask feature to fill the text with the image.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Adobe Illustrator CS5 and begin working on a blank document.

    • 2

Click the "File" pull-down at the top of the window and select "Place." Find and double-click the image that you want to fill the text with. The image appears as a background for the document.

    • 3

Click the "Type" tool on the left side of the window, or press "T." Click the location on the document where you want to add text, then type to add the text. Select a sufficiently large font size so you will be able to see the image fill.

    • 4

Click the white arrow on the left side of the window, or press "A." Press "Ctrl" and "A" simultaneously to select both the image and text.

    • 5

Click the "Object" pull-down menu, then click "Clipping Mask" and "Make." This fills the outline of the text with the image while removing the image from the background of the document.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the image fill from the text, open the "Object" pull-down menu, then click "Clipping Mask" and "Release."
