How to Crochet Around a Headband
Create unique hair accessories, by taking an inexpensive plastic headband and transforming it into a fashion statement with crochet. Any type of medium-weight yarn works well for this craft. Variegated yarns add multiple colors without having to change yarn. Specialty supplies like "eyelash" yarn and pom-pom yarn create whimsy. Choose the type of yarn or pearl cotton that suits your personality. A crochet project like this one is suitable to do with a 4H or scout group.

1
Attach the yarn to the crochet hook, with a slip stitch. Start to crochet over the headband. Holding the headband in your left hand, wrap the yarn from under the headband and over the top. Make one chain stitch. Secure this strand of yarn to the headband, with masking tape.

2
Wrap the yarn over the headband, and make a chain stitch. Repeat until the headband is completely covered in yarn and there is a row of chain stitching along one side of the headband. Secure the end with masking tape. Fasten off the yarn.

3
Turn the headband so that the side without the chain stitching is closest to you. Attach yarn to the crochet hook, with a chain stitch. Slip the crochet hook through one strand of yarn on the headband, yarn over and pull back through to where you began. Slip one loop off the hook. Repeat this with each strand of yarn on the headband, until you get to the end.

4
Turn the headband so you can work on the same side you just completed, but go back the other way. Make one chain stitch in each of the previous slip stitches. Fasten off the yarn, when you get to the end.

5
Use a darning needle, to weave the loose ends of the yarn through the stitching. Gently remove the masking tape from one end of the headband. Add a small amount of glue under the strands of yarn. Allow to dry. Glue the opposite end in the same manner.
