How to Host a Pub Quiz
Pub quizzes, trivia contests that pit teams against each other in a local bar, have found widespread popularity. These quizzes are broken up into a series of rounds, each of which often has a themed set of questions. Hosting your own pub quiz requires little effort and can result in a fun evening for both you and your guests.

1
Start planning your pub quiz by locating a venue to host it. Speak with local owners about hosting at their pub as a way to generate business.
-
2
Create signs advertising the pub quiz that can be hung in the pub the week before to create buzz. These signs can be simple, such as handwritten and photocopied sheets of paper, or complex, incorporating computer graphics and poster-board.

3
Determine the number and type of rounds you wish to have for your quiz. Factual rounds include questions about TV shows and movies, sports, news or general knowledge. Picture rounds have teams identify objects, people or places from photographs on printed hand-outs. In puzzle rounds, teams must solve word or number problems supplied to them by the host on pieces of paper. "Who am I?" rounds ask teams to identify a famous person based upon clues given by the host. Music rounds have the contestants identify a song played on a stereo.

Begin to generate packs of questions for each of your rounds. With such a broad range of topics available, questions can be drawn from anywhere. Good sources for question material include newspapers, news, sports and entertainment websites, along with riddle and puzzle websites and reference material such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. There is no rule to the number of questions you can have per round, but a maximum of 10 questions per round keeps the game fresh. Write these questions down, along with their answers, on a master sheet.
-
5
On the night of the pub quiz, pass out notepads and pens or pencils to each team so that they can write down their answers.
-
6
Begin the pub quiz with the first round, asking the series of questions until the round is over. You can choose to score the teams' answers after each round or wait until the end of the game.
-
7
Follow with subsequent rounds until all questions have been asked and answered. Tally up the correct answers from each team and identify a winner. Present the winner with a prize and advertise the date of the next pub quiz. Prizes can include a round of drinks, money if an entry fee was charged at the door, small trophies or any other item you choose.
