A basic frame around your image can help it stand out.

Paint.net is a free application that allows you to do basic drawing and photo editing. Using this application you can resize and manipulate your images or even add a picture frame around them. This can create a nice look when you print the image, even if you choose not to physically frame it. With creative use of rectangles and colors you can customize your frames to your style and image.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Paint.net from the website of the same name. The application is free and works on Windows operating systems.

    • 2

Launch Paint.net when the installation is complete and click "Open" from the toolbar on the top of the window. Browse to the image you wish to edit and double click its file name.

    • 3

Click "Image" and click "Canvas Size." Select "Middle" from the drop-down list titled Anchor at the bottom of the window. Click "By Percentage" and decrease the listed value to 90 percent. Click "OK." Your canvas will increase in size giving you enough space to draw your frame.

    • 4

Select the "Rectangle Tool" from the toolbox. Select the "Brush Width" drop-down list and select a number to decide the width of the lines you'll draw. The line thickness grows as the numbers get higher.

    • 5

Select a line color from the "Colors" window. Click your mouse at the top left corner of the image and drag it down to the bottom right corner. Release the button to leave a rectangle drawn around the image.

    • 6

Draw a second rectangle around the extreme edges of the canvas to create the outside edge of your frame.

    • 7

Select the "Paint Bucket" from the toolbox. Slide the "Tolerance" slider that appears above your image to 10 percent. Select a color from the "Colors" window.

    • 8

Click your mouse in the white space between your two rectangles to fill the color of your frame. You can click the lines to change their color as well. After filling the outer rectangles you will have a simple frame around your image.

Tips & Warnings

  • Increase the size of your canvas again after creating your frame to add an addition rectangle to the outside of your first. This creates the look of a frame with a mat over your image.

  • Do not save over your original image; you'll want to have the original to fall back on if you decide you don't like the changes you've made.
