How to Make a Single Color Friendship Bracelet With Yarn

How to Make a Single Color Friendship Bracelet With Yarn thumbnail
Friendship bracelets come in many designs and colors.

Friendship bracelets are traditionally made by knotting colorful embroidery floss, yarn or other types of thread in unique patterns. The person who made the bracelet usually gives it to a dear friend as a sign of their shared friendship. Making a single-colored friendship bracelet with yarn with a typical half-hitch knot will give you a good practice run before making other types of friendship bracelets with more colors or complicated designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out four lengths of yarn that are each 5 feet long. The yarn should all be the same color.

    • 2

Match one end of all the yarn strands up with each other and hold them in place firmly. Smooth out the strands so they all lie at even lengths. Fold all the lengths of yarn in half together.

    • 3

Hold the folded yarn at the top so you now have eight lengths of yarn measuring 2 1/2 feet. Tie a knot 6 inches from the top to form a loop and let the rest of the yarn hang freely. Push a safety pin through the knot and attach it to one side of the pillow.

    • 4

Smooth out the strands of yarn and separate them so they lie side by side but do not overlap.

    • 5

Hold the first strand of yarn on the left with one hand and the next strand in your other hand. Hold the second strand tight and wrap the first strand over the second, then under it and through the "hole" you've formed. Pull up slightly to tighten it and pull all the way until it stops at the top by the knot.

    • 6

Grab the same strand you just pulled up and repeat the same knot with the next string in line. Pull up so that it stops by the top knot. You should have two "bumps" now by the top knot, one next to the other.

    • 7

Knot all of the strands as you did in Step 6. You should have "bumps" all the way across in a diagonal row by the top knot. Start with the first strand of yarn again on the very left and repeat this pattern until the bracelet is the length you want.

    • 8

Tie a knot at the bottom, just like the top knot you made. Cut the remaining strands of yarn approximately 6 inches from the bottom knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't worry if you tie a knot too "tight" so that it stops just before the row above, creating an open spot. Gently lift the knot up and continue pulling gently until the knot is flush with the others in the same row.

  • Tightening all of the knots too tight will cause the bracelet to curve in on itself. Sometimes curving is unavoidable. But to lessen the effect, use additional safety pins to keep the bracelet flat against pillow.
