Bolo ties are traditional western attire.

Bolo ties, also known as bola ties, are traditional western or cowboy attire. A bolo tie consists of a piece of leather or braided cord with decorative metal clips at the ends, secured by a ornamental bolo tie clasp. Tie clasps are often made of silver and adorned with precious stones or rocks. The ties can be worn with the clasp tight against the collar or little lower for a more relaxed look. Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of braided leather cord to a length between 36 and 42 inches. The exact length needed varies on personal preference. Bolo ties are typically worn with the cords extending 3 to 4 inches below the breastbone.

    • 2

Attach a bolo tip to each end of the leather cord. Apply a clear epoxy adhesive to the inside of the tip with a toothpick. Push the end of the leather cord into the tip. Use a needle-nose pliers to gently tighten the tip around the cord. Allow the adhesive to dry. If you are using sterling or gold tips, a non-permanent adhesive is recommended.

Secure a decorative rock or stone to the bolo tie clasp. Place the stone on the flat surface of the clasp and glue it on. The basic clasp will accommodate a stone from 1 to 4 inches in diameter. Slide the ends of the tips through the clasp. Place the cord over your neck and secure the slide at the desired point.
