Make a wig form to keep your wig tangle-free.

Wig forms protect your wig and hairpieces from creasing and tangling. They also offer a way to display or create wigs. As an alternative to purchasing wig forms online or from a wig shop, create your own wig using materials in your home. Choose smooth, snag-free objects that will stand on their own and hold their shape. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your head with a tailor's tape measure. Start at your forehead, run the tape measure just over the top of both ears and around the back of your head, and finish back at the forehead. The average head is 21 to 22 inches in diameter.

Choose a smooth, cylindrical object that has approximately the same diameter as your head. Bowls, fitness balls and foam balls make good wig forms. If you have a foam ball, cut it down to the right size using scissors.

    • 3

Create a stand for the wig form. Place a bowl on top of a large vase, for example, or secure a fitness ball to a board using superglue. If you cut your wig form out of foam, make the bottom of the foam flat or even cut a neck and shoulders, finishing with a flat base. Decorate and disguise the base with a chiffon scarf or lace.

Cover the wig form with silk material to further protect the wig from any debris and make it easy to remove. Alternatively, cover the form with thin, nonslip material such as shelf or drawer liner to secure your wig to the form so you can brush or braid it.
