Information on Barcode Scanners
Barcodes, or machine-readable data, are often used to identify and price products and other items. These barcodes must be read by a device that can understand these codes. Barcode scanners are used for this function.

Definition
-
Barcode scanners, often referred to as barcode readers, are electronic devices designed to interpret barcodes. Barcode scanners operate similarly to flatbed scanners, or devices used to optically scan images and text.
Function
-
Barcode scanners use a lens through which a light source emits. The light source connects to sensors that translate optical impulses into electric impulses. Decoder circuitry is used by barcode scanners to analyze the image data of the barcode once it is received from the light sensor. The circuitry then transmits the data from the barcode to the scanner's output port.

Methods
-
Barcode scanners use different scanning methods. A wand-type or pen barcode scanner is activated when the user swipes a pen over a barcode. Reader-gate barcode scanners operate by positioning the barcode beneath the gate. Semi-automatic hand-held scanners can be activated by holding the barcode in close vicinity to the scanner reader.
