What's more? Each sugar lip scrub is made with white sugar and oil—both of which you likely already have in the pantry. We used olive oil and coconut oil, but other options such as almond oil or jojoba oil work just as well. From there, we added flavoring oils to create fresh flavors and lip-safe cosmetic-grade mica powder for coloring.

Luckily, DIY lip scrubs are some of the easiest skin-care projects you can tackle—and they almost look good enough to eat (though we don't advise taking a bite!). In a small bowl, combine white sugar, olive oil and strawberry flavoring oil. Mix well.

If the scrub is too dry for your liking, add a bit more olive oil until you get the desired consistency. You can also add more flavoring oil.

Tip

For an extra-moisturizing lip scrub, add a few drops of vitamin E oil.

2. Add mica powder

To color lip scrub, add a pinch of red or pink mica powder. Keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Mix until mica powder is thoroughly dispersed.

Transfer strawberry lip scrub into jars. To use, scoop out a small amount with a clean finger, then gently rub it on your lips in a circular motion. Wash off with warm water, pat dry with a washcloth and hydrate with lip balm or petroleum jelly.

Tip

For a plumping effect, mix a drop or two of peppermint essential oil into the lip scrub. Note that peppermint oil is very strong, so avoid using too much.

Idea 2: Orange Lip Scrub

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Tbsp. white sugar

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil, plus more as needed

  • 3 to 5 drops orange, blood orange or orange cream flavoring oil

  • Pinch of orange lip-safe mica powder

  • Mini jars with airtight lids

  • Stick or spoon for mixing

For a creamy orange scent, use orange flavoring oil and pure vanilla extract. A few drops of each will do the trick.

2. Mix in mica powder

Add a pinch of orange powder to sugar lip scrub. Again, a little goes a long way, so avoid adding too much. Stir well until combined.

Transfer DIY lip scrub recipe into jars. To use, scoop out a tiny amount with a clean finger and rub it on your lips. Be sure to do this in a circular motion to help remove dead skin cells.

Wash off scrub with warm water, pat your lips dry and apply lip balm to lock in moisture.

Using Lip Scrubs During Summer

We know what you’re thinking: Aren’t lip exfoliators usually a part of winter lip care? Well, yes—but our lips need just much love during the summer months, especially when the air conditioners are on! Using a lip scrub all year round makes it easy to prevent dry lips, ensuring your lip balm, lip gloss and other lip products can properly do their thing.

Idea 3: Piña Colada Lip Scrub

Things You'll Need

  • 2 Tbsp. white sugar

  • 1 Tbsp. coconut oil

  • 3 to 5 drops pineapple flavoring oil

  • Pinch of yellow lip-safe mica powder

  • Mini jars with airtight lids

  • Stick or spoon for mixing

  • Olive oil, as needed

Tip

Coconut oil will help emphasize the piña colada flavor. However, you can also use olive oil and a few drops of coconut extract, along with pineapple flavoring oil. Another option is to omit coconut ingredients for a simple pineapple lip scrub.
