How Do I Download From Wells Fargo to Quicken?

Using Quicken to keep track of personal (and sometimes business) finances can make a tedious job a little less painful. The problem for some, however, is remembering to record bank transactions so that Quicken can provide correct information. In recognition of the dilemma many Quicken users face, the company has collaborated with numerous financial institutions to allow users online access and automatic downloading of account information into Quicken. Wells Fargo is a Quicken partner and while the service is not free, Quicken users can download from Wells Fargo to Quicken.

Enroll in Wells Fargo Direct Connect

  • To enroll in the Wells Fargo Direct Connect program, call the bank directly at (800) 956-4442 or apply through Quicken. To apply for online services through Quicken choose “Online” from the Quicken main menu, then select “Participating Financial Institutions.” When the “Apply for Financial Services” window opens, scroll down to locate “Wells Fargo Direct Connect,” then click the “Apply Now” button under the Wells Fargo Logo. Follow instructions to complete the application and click “OK” to return to Quicken. It takes approximately seven to 10 business days to receive a Personal Identification Number, or PIN, that you use, along with your Social Security number, as your user name to connect to Wells Fargo through Quicken.

Becoming a Wells Fargo Direct Connect customer allows greater options for managing your account using Quicken. Besides the option to view and download account activity, you can make transfers between accounts such as a checking and savings account. You can also access account services such as check reorders and make stop payment requests by sending emails directly through Quicken.

Activate Quicken Accounts

  • To activate and enable download account activity first select the account you want to activate, such as your Wells Fargo checking account. From the menu at the top of the account register, select “Set Up Online” to bring up the Account Setup window. Select “Wells Fargo Direct Connect” from the option in the “Select Your Account” drop-down box. Click to move to the next screen, where you will enter your Wells Fargo Direct Connect user name/Social Security number and PIN number in the password text box.

Quicken will use your information to connect to Wells Fargo and display a list of your accounts. Make your next selection based on whether you have the account already set up in Quicken. If you are already using the account in Quicken, select the “Already Exists” option. If you want to activate an account you need to set up, select the “New” option.

For example, let's say you have both a checking and savings account through Wells Fargo but only track your checking account in Quicken. You enroll in Wells Fargo Direct Connect to download transactions to checking but when activating the account, you see you can also download savings transactions. Select “Already Exists” for the checking account to proceed with setup and then come back after completing. Select “New” for the savings account to set up a new account and proceed with setup.

As the final step in the setup process, decide if you want to store your Direct Connect password in the Quicken password vault or enter it manually every time you want to download transactions.

Download Transactions

  • After completing the setup process, Quicken performs an initial download of all account activity. After the initial setup, anytime you want to download transactions access the “Download Transactions” at the bottom of the account register and click “Update Now.” Quicken will download all account activity to the appropriate Wells Fargo account.
