Which Style of Braids?
-
Men's braided hairstyles are an attractive way for a man with longer hair to do something interesting and low maintenance to their hair. The first step for the man and his hair stylist is to decide how he wants the braids to look. Then the stylist needs to be certain he has everything needed to do the job right. This will include both wide- and thin-toothed combs, small elastics and a spray bottle to moisten the hair to help keep it out of the way. The stylist will also need clips to keep the rest of the hair out of the way as the braids are made.
The Design Process
-
Once the design of the braids has been determined the next step is to comb out the man's entire head of hair. For this part of the process the stylist should use a wide-toothed comb. Then the hair should be pulled apart into a strip that is ready to be braided. Men's braided hairstyles are more difficult to make since the pattern is a part of the style. The rest of the hair should be held back out of the way as the braiding is done.
The next step is to spray the hair that is ready to be braided. This allows it to be combed easier. It is then pulled apart, gently, into three rows of hair and braided. Once the braid is made, and is tight to the head, an elastic band is put on it. This process is then repeated until the entire head has been put into braids. Once again the pattern that is being aimed for is important. Men's braided hairstyles are commonly referred to as cornrows. Many good professional stylists can make cornrows, but it is not uncommon for men to have a family member who will make these braids for them. It takes a patient person to commit the time to braid a man's hair. -
To Relax or Not to Relax
-
When planning men's braided hairstyles, the man should decide whether he wants to relax his hair before the work is done. Most stylists will suggest not relaxing the hair even though it makes it longer. The belief is that when the hair has not been relaxed it is stronger. This is more of a consideration if the man wants to add extensions to his hair when the braiding is done. Hair stylists also recommend that the hair not be wet when adding extensions. Again this affects the hair's strength and its ability to hold the extensions.
