A fence is usually necessary for your property, and once it's erected, you probably don't think much about it. However, you can make your fence an extension of your home and reflective of your family's personalities by painting it in a new and interesting way. Everyone will know which house is yours with an originally painted fence, and it makes for a great family project.
If you're one of those people who doesn't have much of a green thumb, and can kill a plant just by looking at it, try painting a pseudo-garden along the bottom of the fence. Using vivid colors, and bright flowers, you can have a garden all year round, regardless of the weather, and regardless of your gardening ability. Look online for pictures of flowers that you can duplicate, and then print them off when you head outside with your paints. Paint lots of flowers and grass along the base of the fence to make it look like they are growing along the fence line.
If you are the kind of fun-loving family who doesn't mind letting loose, and want your landscaping to be an extension of you, gather up your kids and some paint to do a family fence mural. Hand out paintbrushes and make sure to cover their clothes with painting smocks, and allow them to go to town. They can paint favorite pictures, paint their favorite colors and other designs to make a truly one-of-a kind fence that shows off your family's personality. Or, if you don't want it to be permanent, try painting your fence with blackboard paint and have your family decorate it; it'll wash off each time that it rains.
If you're really looking to make a statement with your fence, but lack the artistic ability to do it on your own, consider hiring a mural artist to come work on your fence. If you're wondering what he should paint, take a cue from some of the things you love. Perhaps it's a favorite vacation destination, a stylized version of your house number or another outdoor scene that you love. Look through books of murals to choose one that will enhance your home and property.
