When you send a print job to a local or network printer, the file's data is first sent to the print spooler (also known as a print queue), which stores the data in its memory until the printer is ready for the job. If you are receiving errors about the print spooler when trying to print a document or add a new printer, you may need to reset your print spooler in order to resolve the problem and begin printing again.

    Restarting the Print Spooler

  1. Before completely resetting the print spooler, you should first attempt to restart the print spooler service to see if it fixes your printing issues. To do so in Windows, open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon. Then open the "Administrative Tools" folder and double-click on the "Services" icon. Scroll down to the "Print Spooler" entry and click on it. If the service is not currently running, click the "Start" link on the left side of the window. If the print spooler is running, hit the "Restart" link. After the service has started again, try adding a new printer or printing another document to see if the issue has been resolved.
On the Mac, select the printer icon from the Dock. If the jobs are stopped, click on the "Start" button. Make sure the printer you want to use is selected from the drop-down menu.
  2. Booting into Safe Mode

  3. If the print spooler errors remain after restarting the service, then you will need to reset your Windows computer's print spooler. In order to do that, you must first boot into safe mode: Restart the computer, and then before the Windows operating system loads, press the "F8" key on your keyboard. Then use the up and down arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" from the list of options and hit "Enter." After the computer finishes booting, log in as you normally would.
  4. Resetting the Print Spooler Files

  5. After successfully booting your computer into safe mode, you can remove and reset the system's print spooler files. Open the Start menu and click on the "My Computer" icon. Go into the C: drive and navigate to the "Windows\System32\Spool" directory. Open the "Printers" and "Drivers" folders and delete all of the contents in them. Once the files have been deleted, restart your computer again and boot in standard mode. The print spooler files will be reset and the errors should no longer appear.
